Whiria te Waitaki is a Te Rūnanga o Moeraki led initiative across their takiwa which aims to provide Moeraki whānau with an opportunity to be actively engaged and employed in management of lands, waters and taonga within their takiwa.

The Whiria te Waitaki project has two core work streams:

  1. Develop and trial a cultural values farm planning framework;

  2. Restoration of cultural and environmental values at Korotuaheka and Te Puna a Maru – these are culturally significant sites in the lower Waitaki valley.

The kaupapa is so meaningful from the point of view that it’s creating access to mahinga kai that has been inaccessible for generations. From a cultural perspective, from a hauora perspective, from a wairua perspective, this project is achieving so much and laying a foundation that will allow our whānau to reintegrate, reconnect and reassert ourselves in the Waitaki.

Kaupapa started in 2021, and funded through to 2027.
